Upper & Lower Back Pain
The spine is divided into three separate sections:
Lower or lumbar spine
Upper or thoracic spine
Neck or cervical spine
Each section has a specific function and capabilities. The lower or lumbar spine is flexible and helps to lift heavy objects. The cervical spine or neck supports and provides motion for the head. The thoracic spine is built for stability and supports the entire body. The ribs are also attached to the thoracic spine and form the rib cage to protect the thorax (giving it the name thoracic spine).
Pain can develop in the upper back, as well as the shoulders and neck, due to poor posture and the muscles becoming weak. Chiropractic treatment for upper back pain commonly includes adjusting the upper spine and improving posture.
If the upper back is injured during sports or an accident, the upper back muscles may not be providing proper body support. Pain in this situation can be caused by overstretching of the muscles, which, in turn, allow the thoracic vertebrae to slip out of place. Adjustment of the spine and strengthening of the muscles can help slip those vertebrae back into place.
Nonspecific low back pain has been shown to improve with initial intensive spinal adjustments, as well as mobilization, followed by a program of maintenance adjustments.
